We don't wear jackets as we walk along the Strand.
With the baby riding piggy-back in his pack, we take in the activity around us: pajama-clad dog owners and their pups meandering along, seagulls drifting and swooping in the air and spandex-uniformed bicyclists scooting by in teams of 4 or 5.
Our beach lot is crowded with cars of every make and year. Most cars have trunks exposed and standing behind them are: Surfers suiting up. Surfers suiting down. Surfers in plainclothes scanning the waves. Surfers rubbing sunblock on their faces, ears and necks.
The deep blue water is sprinkled with surfers in glossy black wetsuits.
Beyond the shoreline, the views of Catalina Island, Santa Monica and Malibu are crystal clear.
Looks like the beginning of a beautiful spring morning.
